CONUAR Background: Innovation and Leadership since 1982

1982

Foundation and early steps

Inauguration of the nuclear fuel manufacturing and assembly- facility, started of production of fuel bundle Atucha I NPP.

1986

Opening of FAE S.A

  • Inauguration of the special alloy tube manufacturing facility.
  • Start of production of zirconium alloy cladding tubes.

1988

Expansion into the CANDU Reactor Market

The Nuclear Fuels (NF) division begins manufacturing and assembling of CANDU®6 fuel bundle for Embalse NPP.

1989 - 1992

CONUAR start the manufacturing of tooling and reactor internals

  • Conuar manufactured first remotely controlled tools (crushing, gripping and cutting) for Atucha I Reactor intervention.
  • Conuar starts the manufacturing & assembling of Atucha I Reactor Coolant Channels; until present Conuar have being producing more than 650 of those components for Atucha II also.

1993

Start MTR Fuel Assembly Production

Conuar built a tailormade facility and started production of fuels assemblies for the RA-3 MTR Reactor up to 20% enrichment. RA-3 produces medicinal radioisotopes (Technetium-99m and Molybdenum-99), and performs nuclear fuel qualifications, materials studies, sample irradiation for neutron activation analysis, BNCT testing and, rock irradiation for thermochronology studies used in oil industry.

1994

Automation & Efficiency

Automated systems are implemented along through nuclear fuel bundles production line.

1997

Innovation in Special Alloys

FAE begins to produce seamless tubes made of stainless steel and nickel alloys, solidifying its leadership in advanced materials.

1998

Start of SEU (0.85%) Uranium pellets production for CNA-I bundles

2002

Uranium Pellets Export

CONUAR manufactured and exported aprox. 6tU of SEU (0.95%) CANDU® Uranium pellets stacks in 20f. container to Zircatec-Canada.

2004

Internal Components to OPAL reactor

Manufacturing and supply of materials and components for the OPAL MTR Reactor, designed by INVAP for ANSTO, Australia.

2007

Creation of SM&S

It is established the Special Materials & Services (SM&S) Division, that latterly manufactured and supplied practically whole CANDU Channel Components, installed at the Embalse NPP Extension Life Project.

2010

Conuar built a tailormade facility and started production of fuels assemblies for CNA-II fuels.

2011 - 2014

ASME Certifications and Technical Leadership

  • CONUAR becomes an ASME certified holder: N, NPT, NS and NA, being also MO.
  • CONUAR obtained qualification from TSSA, AECL and CANDU Energy, for manufacturing and supply for Embalse NPP Life Extension Project following channel components:
    • End Fitting Assemblies, Pressure Tubes, and Calandria Tubes.
    • Channel Closure Plugs and Shield Plugs.
    • U-tubes for the new Steam Generators
    • U-tubes and engineering and manufacturing of new Moderator Heat Exchangers.
    • Full set of Feeders, its Supports, including assembly at site.

Components have been operating without notifications since EMBALSE CANDU NPP was reconnected to grid in March 2019 delivering 656 MWe.

It is started of Titanium Gr.9 seamless tube production for commercial aircraft hydraulic systems, including Airbus planes.

2015

Innovation in Advanced Reactors

  • Manufacturing of PWR fuel assemblies for the CAREM-25 SMR (1.8% & 3.1% enrichment) and its reactivity control rods (Ag-In-Cd).
  • Manufacturing and export of U-tubes for Labgene Project – Brasil.

2016

CAREM-25 Small Modular Reactor

  • Manufacturing of seamless alloy 690 tubes – 35 meters in length.
  • Start construction of Helical Coiled Steam Generator and steel Liner Contention of CAREM-25 SMR.

2017

Nuclear Fuels for Research Reactors

Production of nuclear fuel SEU (2.1%) and Hafnium reactivity control rods for the Saudi Arabia LPRR Reactor designed by INVAP.

2018

In the Critical Path of

Completion of Feeders and Supports Assembly for Embalse NPP Refurbishment.

2019

Export to India

Export of U-Tubes for Steam Generators from RAPP-8 NPP (BHEL).

2022

Innovations in Storage and Exports

  • Assembly in ASEQ I facility of 360 of Spent Fuel Canisters, Casks Seal Caps, manufactured on previous years; first dry storage facility for Atucha I and II NPPs.
  • Implementation of artificial visual inspection in nuclear fuel production.
  • Exports of CANDU fuel channel components (spares) to Canada and China.

2023

Technological and Regulatory Advancements

  • Compliance with NRC 10 CFR 50 Appendix B and 10 CFR 21 safety regulations, with exports planned for Turkey Point Units 3 & 4.
  • Export of first set of U-tubes for the new steam generators for the Haryana NPP – India Project – BHEL.
